Many Spaniards believe taxes are necessary, but lack transparency.
Half of Spaniards consider taxes essential for society, according to research by the Spanish CIS.
Yet, over 80% believe the government does a poor job of explaining where the money goes; only 18% feel well-informed.
Tax is permissible, as long as it's fair: most Spaniards are willing to pay, provided the system is fair and transparent.
There is broad support for increased funding for healthcare, education, and poverty reduction. Many also believe that large corporations and the wealthy should contribute more, and that tax evasion should be tackled more rigorously.
Trains beat planes in Spain: record number of passengers
In 2024, nearly 40 million people took the high-speed train in Spain, 22% more than last year and 77% more than in 2019. Trains are particularly popular on routes like Madrid–Barcelona and Madrid–Valencia, thanks in part to cheaper tickets resulting from competition.
Renfe remains the market leader, but faces stiff competition from Iryo and Ouigo. On Madrid–Barcelona routes, over 80% now choose the train.
Regional rail traffic is also growing strongly, while rail freight transport actually declined. Nevertheless, total rail revenues rose to €1.4 billion.

Are cheap second homes in Spain a thing of the past?
The Spanish government wants to impose a higher tax rate on non-EU citizens who buy a home, with a levy of up to 100%. Tourist rentals will also be tackled more rigorously.
The goal: to cool the overheated housing market and make housing more affordable for Spaniards.

Yet, many Spaniards, especially young people, are desperate due to the exploding prices.
Prime Minister Sánchez promises more social housing, but the pace is slow.
The opposition calls the plan populist and fears economic damage in popular regions.
