Spain is building an unhackable quantum satellite
Spain is developing the QKD-GEO, the world's first geostationary quantum satellite designed to make communications completely hackproof. The launch is scheduled for 2028.
The project, led by Thales Alenia Space and Hispasat, is receiving €103 million in EU funding.
The technology, quantum key distribution (QKD), sends passwords as photons that disappear as soon as someone intercepts them. This makes any hacking attempt immediately visible.
With a single satellite at an altitude of 36,000 km, Spain can secure a large part of the Earth, whereas China needs entire networks. A test between La Palma and Tenerife (140 km) will be conducted in 2026.

EU takes Spain to court over tax discrimination
The European Commission is taking Spain to the EU Court of Justice because foreigners are taxed more heavily than residents. This mainly concerns an additional tax on second homes and the lack of deferral options for capital gains. Brussels sees this as discrimination that hinders free movement and investment. Spain has two months to amend the rules, otherwise it faces fines.
