Solar panels useless during power outage in Spain
During a major power outage in Spain, many families with solar panels still found themselves without power. Why? Most systems are “on-grid”: they only work when the public grid is active. In case of power cuts, they switch off automatically to protect technicians working on the grid.
Without batteries or a special inverter operating in “island mode”, you cannot use your own solar power at such a time. Battery back-up systems are possible, but more expensive and complex.
The blackout shows that many people are insufficiently informed about these limitations. Those who really want to be independent should invest in a system with storage and autonomous operation.

Rental prices in Spain break record again.
In April 2024, average rents in Spain rose to a record high of 14.3 euro/m², up 10% year-on-year. Barcelona remains the most expensive city (23.8 euros/m²), followed by Madrid, the Balearic Islands, Malaga and San Sebastián.
The only city where rents fell was Lleida (-2.3%). Elsewhere, prices rose sharply, especially in Castellón, Tenerife and Ávila.
Regionally, Madrid (€19.5/m²) and the Balearic Islands (€19.1/m²) were the most expensive. The cheapest regions are Extremadura (€7/m²) and Castilla-La Mancha (€7.7/m²).
Rising prices are mainly due to a shortage of supply and high demand.

What Belgians and Dutch pay for a property in Spain - striking figures
In 2024, Belgian and buyers paid an average of 2097 euros per square metre for a property in Spain.
This is well above the national average of 1567 euros.
The Dutch are also in the higher regions with 2330 euros per square metre.
According to the Spanish Land Registry, foreigners account for 15% of all house sales, with Americans at the top as big spenders (2921 euros/m²), followed by Swedes (2677 euros) and Germans (2401 euros).
British buyers, although the largest in number, pay remarkably less (1973 euros/m²). At the bottom of the list are Moroccans (709 euros) and Romanians (1164 euros).
The most popular region remains Alicante, where 41% of properties go to foreigners, followed by Málaga and the Balearic Islands. The Balearic Islands has the highest average price: more than 3,200 euros per sq m.
Rising demand from abroad - especially in tourist areas - is further driving up prices
