Wero: A European answer to US payment giants
Wero is a new digital payment system developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) to provide a powerful European alternative to major US players such as PayPal, Visa and Mastercard. The platform should provide faster, safer and simpler payments within Europe, with the aim of strengthening the continent's digital sovereignty.
Through Wero, users can transfer money with just a phone number, email address or QR code - without the need for an IBAN. The system will be integrated directly into participating banks' apps, so consumers will not need to download a separate application. In 2024, Wero was launched in Germany, France and Belgium. The Netherlands and Luxembourg, among others, will follow in 2025 and 2026.
In Spain, Wero is not yet active, partly because the popular local payment system Bizum is already well established. Spain previously withdrew from the EPI project, but talks are currently underway on possible cooperation or integration into a wider European infrastructure.
In time, Wero should not only enable P2P payments, but also function in physical shops, for online purchases and recurring payments. The system aims to become a common, European alternative that replaces national solutions and offers direct competition to international tech companies in the payments market.


New road sign in Spain: green border means advisory speed
Soon you may encounter a speed sign with a green border in Spain. This indicates not a mandatory, but an advisory speed.
The Spanish traffic department (DGT) is testing the sign because it would be more visible than the classic blue sign, especially in bad weather or on busy roads. The aim is to make traffic safer and clearer, including for foreign drivers.
See such a sign? No need to brake, but pay extra attention: a dangerous point or sharp turn usually follows.

What is the roadmap for letting your property legally in Spain?
To rent out your property on the Costa Del Sol, for example, you need to meet a number of legal requirements. Below is a clear roadmap, including the required documents, the parties who can support you and the expected turnaround times.
1. Basic requirements for Rentals
a. Proof of ownership (Escritura Pública)
This document proves that you are the legal owner.
You have already had this since the purchase in March.
b. Energy label (Certificado de Eficiencia Energética, CEE)
Mandatory for all rentals, valid for 10 years.
Issued by a certified technician.
Delivery time: 3 to 7 working days.
Cost: around €100-€200.
c. Certificate of habitability (Cédula de Habitabilidad).
Confirms that the property meets the legal habitability requirements.
New construction projects often already have this; consult your promoter.
If not present, an architect or engineer can issue it.
Delivery time: 1 to 2 weeks.
2. Registration for Tourist Rental (VUT/VTAR)
For short stays (e.g. via Airbnb or Booking.com), you need to register your property as Vivienda de Uso Turístico (VUT). In Andalusia, this is also known as Vivienda Turística de Alojamiento Rural (VTAR).
a. Requirements for VUT registration:
Valid energy label (CEE).
Certificate of habitability.
Property certificate.
Evacuation plan (if required).
b. Application procedure:
Registration is through the Andalusian Tourist Registry (Registro de Turismo de Andalucía).

c. NRA (Número de Registro de Alojamiento)
A unique rental number issued by SES Hospedaje.
Required for tourist rentals.

Required for online communication with Spanish government agencies.
To be applied for via the FNMT website.

3. Long-Term Rental (More than 11 Months)
If you prefer longer rental periods, the following requirements apply:
Standard rental contract in accordance with Spanish law.
Registration of the contract with the Ministerio de Justicia.
Deposit of one month's rent, fixed in an escrow account.

4. Taxes and Financial Obligations
IBI (property tax): Make sure this is up to date.
Income tax: Non-residents fall under IRNR, residents under IRPF.
