The story behind the 12 grapes
The tradition of the 12 grapes (“Las doce uvas de la suerte”) celebrates its 114th anniversary this year. According to legend, it began in 1909-1910 in Viñalopó (Alicante) after a bumper grape harvest. However, there is evidence that the custom already existed in Madrid in 1893, possibly for luck, money, and health, or inspired by French traditions.
Since 1962, TVE has been broadcasting the 12 chimes from Puerta del Sol, making the grape tradition a national one. Spaniards also put money in their shoes, place suitcases by the door, or wear red/white underwear for luck and love.
Five alternatives to the traditional lucky grapes
In Spain, people eat 12 grapes for good luck with each stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. Not everyone likes grapes, is allergic to them, or wants something different. Here are some tasty alternatives:
Chocolate-covered raisins: fruit and chocolate in one bite.
Popcorn: light and surprising, but watch out for flying kernels.
Peanuts: savory and crunchy.
Pistachios: stylish, but shelled works best.
Olives: typically Spanish, delicious with cava for a Mediterranean feel.
Why was it so cold in Spain at Christmas?
Despite expectations of a warm winter, Christmas was cold and wet in many parts of Spain. AEMET explains that seasonal forecasts are based on the average for December, January, and February, and short periods of cold weather are still possible.
Even in a mild winter, days with low temperatures can occur. In December, the average weather was still higher than normal due to warmer periods earlier or later in the month. This pattern is becoming more common and fits within broader climate change trends.

Important dates for tax returns in Spain in 2026
For 2026, tax returns for 2025 must be submitted. Important dates:
Online via Renta WEB: April 8 – June 30
Telephone assistance: May 6 – June 30 (appointments from April 29)
Tax office: June 1–30 (appointments from May 29)
New: everyone receiving unemployment benefits in 2025 must file a tax return, including people on low incomes. Some forms are submitted monthly instead of annually.
Tip: gather all your information now and check your deductions to avoid mistakes and stress.
