Will there be hydrogen-powered high-speed trains in Spain?
A consortium of Spanish companies, including Talgo, Repsol and ADIF, is working on the Hympulso project, aimed at developing Spain's first hydrogen-powered high-speed train. This initiative aims to provide an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel vehicles on routes without overhead wires. The project includes a dual-hybrid system that integrates hydrogen technology with battery-electric propulsion, with Talgo's experience with this system increasing its chances of success.
In parallel with Hympulso, the FCH2Rail consortium is working on similar technology for hydrogen trains, with the aim of replacing diesel trains on non-electrified routes. Both initiatives aim to reduce emissions and stimulate the European hydrogen market. The FCH2Rail consortium aims for large-scale implementation of this technology by 2025, which is in line with the ambition to eventually replace diesel vehicles with cleaner alternatives.
