What was once a quick and cheap solution for electricity and telecoms is now a thorn in the side of many local authorities. Local authorities want to tackle this ‘visual pollution’ by laying cables underground or neatly concealing them, but they are facing a technical and financial maze.
The problem is deeply rooted: for years, utility companies laid their own lines in an uncoordinated manner, meaning that no one has a complete map of the layered network anymore. Moreover, property rights, high remediation costs and old habits are at odds with one another. Whilst cables in Belgium and the Netherlands have been underground for decades, modernisation in Spain remains a slow process. The big question remains: who will foot the enormous bill for clearing up this iconic but cluttered streetscape?
A SIESTA AS MEDICINE?
Spanish doctors have officially recognised the siesta as having medical benefits: it is not a sign of laziness, but an essential part of a healthy heart. A new consensus document from Spanish internists and vascular specialists states that an afternoon rest of up to 30 minutes is the perfect complement to the Mediterranean diet. It helps with stress management, metabolism and restoring the body’s natural rhythm.
The lesson? It’s not just about what’s on your plate (olive oil, fish, vegetables), but also about the rhythm surrounding it. Eating together, taking your time and having a short rest after lunch form a powerful shield against modern lifestyle diseases. Timing is key, though: don’t sleep for longer than half an hour, otherwise your night’s sleep will be disrupted and you’ll wake up feeling groggy. In short, the Mediterranean lifestyle is not a diet, but a culture of rest and social interaction.
