The silent giants of Europe
The Silent Giants: These 5 European companies control the global economy (without you knowing it)
Although American tech giants such as Apple, Microsoft and NVIDIA dominate the spotlight, Europe has a number of ‘silent giants’ that are indispensable to the global economy. Without them, the American tech sector would be severely hampered. These are the key European players competing for dominance:
1. ASML (Netherlands): The King of Chips This is perhaps the most important company in the world that you rarely hear about. ASML makes the machines that produce advanced chips. · The core of their power: They have a virtual global monopoly on EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet) lithography machines. Without these machines from Veldhoven, neither Apple's iPhones nor NVIDIA's AI chips can be produced. · Position of power: ASML is the only player in the world that possesses the technology to manufacture chips on the smallest scale (currently 2-3 nanometres, and beyond).
2. Novo Nordisk (Denmark): The Health Giant This company is currently the most valuable in Europe, surpassing even LVMH. · The battle: With their blockbuster drugs Ozempic and Wegovy (for diabetes and obesity), they dominate a revolutionary market. Demand is particularly high in the United States. · Impact: They are transforming healthcare and directly challenging American pharmaceutical companies such as Eli Lilly.
3. SAP (Germany): The Digital Backbone of Businesses While Microsoft and Google lead the consumer market, SAP is the undisputed leader in business software (ERP systems). · The battle: Most large multinationals run on SAP for their logistics, HR and finance. The race for the best AI-driven business software is in full swing, with SAP facing competition from Oracle, Salesforce and Microsoft.
4. Airbus (European consortium): Ruler of the Skies Airbus is a textbook example of successful European cooperation. · The battle: It has forced arch-rival Boeing onto the defensive in recent years. While Boeing struggles with production problems, Airbus is gaining market share with efficient and reliable aircraft such as the A320neo family.
5. Adyen (Netherlands) & Spotify (Sweden): The Tech Disruptors · Adyen: This Dutch company is the invisible engine behind payments for companies such as Uber, Netflix and Spotify. Their all-in-one platform is often considered technologically superior to competitors such as Stripe. · Spotify: Despite enormous pressure from Apple Music and Amazon Music, Sweden's Spotify remains the world's largest subscription-based music streaming service, thanks to its personalised recommendations and user-friendliness.
The ‘GRANOLAS’: Europe's Stable Counterpart In the financial world, the GRANOLAS are known as a group of 11 large European companies (including GSK, Roche, ASML, Nestlé, and LVMH). Together, they form an often more stable and less volatile alternative to American tech stocks, with a strong track record of profitability.

It is almost impossible to find workers for these jobs in Spain
Although unemployment has fallen, Spanish employers are finding it increasingly difficult to recruit staff. Almost 20% of vacancies are difficult or impossible to fill, particularly in construction, hospitality, healthcare and transport. Positions such as waiter, chef, lorry driver and nurse often remain vacant for long periods of time.
The causes are clear: an ageing population, a low influx of young people and unattractive working conditions such as long hours, weekend work and relatively low wages. In healthcare, too, high work pressure is causing staff shortages, which further exacerbates the problem.
Strikingly, there are still many job seekers, but their skills often do not match the demand. According to experts, better wages, more flexible working hours and more training are needed to make these crucial professions attractive again.

The housing crisis in Spain is not caused by tourist rentals, but by a structural shortage of new construction.
Nevertheless, tourism, especially in cities such as Barcelona, is often singled out as the scapegoat, resulting in increasingly stringent regulations. However, the figures tell a different story.
Tourist rentals account for only a very small proportion of the total housing supply: just over 1% in Barcelona and just above 1% in Spain as a whole. Even a complete abolition would have little effect on rental and purchase prices. Furthermore, less than 13% of tourist accommodation is located in the six largest cities, where almost 17% of the population lives. Most are located in coastal and holiday areas.
The crux of the problem is simple: for years, there has been too little construction. Demand continues to rise, while supply lags behind due to strict regulations, lengthy permit processes and increasing uncertainty for investors. When investing becomes too risky, new construction comes to a standstill, with rising prices as an inevitable consequence. Young people and middle-income earners in particular pay the price for this.
Tourism has become an easy scapegoat, even though the sector accounts for around 13% of the Spanish economy and remains crucial for employment and local income. Moreover, growth is not exceptionally higher than before the pandemic.
Without additional housing, there is no solution. Restrictions on tourist rentals alone do not solve anything. According to experts, building more is the only sustainable way to achieve affordable housing in Spain.
